Marill Re-Reads "Death of the Night"
Was it death or depth, I suppose I'll never bother to find out now. Titles like these are a bitter reminder of a band I used to like.....
ANYWAY, it's time to read a one I haven't read in absolutely ages. I don't remember much. Something about craphead past lives and ghosts, and the latter's only cos I remember the episode's inspiration: the Pokemon episode "The Ghost of Maiden's Peak". Remember that, cos I'm sure these two episodes have a lot in common. snigger.
There's not much to say about this one, NOT YET. Lets do it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Episode starts with a Janeway log explaining that the planet of the episode is a resort which has the supplies they need.
Anyway, this planet has been known to have lovely warm weather and it'll be perfect for shore leave. I wonder how long it'll take before someone gets into trouble... hey it always happens.
"Would you hurry up, Kath.. the coffee's getting cold," Phoebe's voice said.
Anyway, that's all for now log... I need some coffee..
Good god, that's a tragedy. That poor coffee.
Enterprise,
Transporter Room:
Chakotay,
Claire, Nichola and Lee were standing near the transporter pad. They
looked extremely bored, well Nichola didn't.. she was watching
Chakotay and Lee.
"How long are they going to be? I mean, this is their ship.. shouldn't they of got here before us?" Lee moaned.
No reason I see for the Enterprise to be the one doing the work. Chakotay's even there.
Fifth Enterprise E: 1
"We beamed to this transporter room, transporting is quicker than walking," Chakotay said.
"May I ask, what was the point of that? We could of just beamed straight to the planet," Claire said.
We will never know.
The characters go all unfunny fourth wall on us, get shocked by the writers, cos they still have to find someway of getting in despite the (I hope) phasing out.
"Oh, just checking to see which group you two would go in," Nichola replied.
Chakotay and Lee glanced at each other, they then glanced back at her. "What?" Chakotay asked.
"The big guy would fit into the 'too old' group, and the other one would fit into the 'annoying group'," Nichola replied.
Oh Nichola's "accessorising" again.
Tom, Lena and Craig arrive, so that leaves who in charge of the Enterprise? I wouldn't worry, I'm sure it's in better hands.
"Erm, can we just go?" Tom asked in a stutter.
"Sure, we just have to sort out teams. Tom, Nikki, you're with me."
"It's Nichola," Nichola said as Tom started to look petrified.
Tom and Nikki is with who?????
process of elimination says its Chakotay. Readers shouldn't have to do that.
"Dad, the deal was as soon as Voyager got it's crew back and everything, I'd take command of the Enterprise. You don't choose the teams when you're here," Lena said.
OH OF COURSE
Lena the Sue Count: +1
"The awaymission was Captain Janeway's decision, a Voyager decision, so you take orders from me. Is that clear?" Chakotay asked.
Yep, this is how it's supposed to work. Janeway commands both ships, Lena's just the face of the Enterprise, something to keep the spoilt princess happy. which is clearly working. I'm glad at least Chakotay's not putting up with this tantrum.
Since two episodes ago he got encouraged, Craig sticks up for her.
"Captain Janeway seems to have made this fleet like a monarchy, that means in a way I have authority over Lena any day," Chakotay said.
Lena gets the same thought some of us do, but smiles?? Girl, you just demoted yourself to first officer. ALL HAIL OUR OVERLORD, CAPTAIN JAMES!!
Lena grinned evilly. "Really, a monarchy? In that case, I have the perfect first officer and second in command in mind."
Everyone but Lena, Lee and Nikki looked rather worried. "Er, who?" Lee asked.
Ah hem, James is the eldest. And an even bigger ah hem, Lena's forgetting that both Yasmin and herself are not next in line after James.
ALL HAIL OUR PRINCE, FIRST OFFICER COMMANDER DUNCAN!
Chakotay:
Thankfully Nikki, aka the not human never been to Earth so wouldn't know monarchy girl, corrects everyone to almost what I said. Chakotay has his life flash before his eyes twice. Still, recent killing spree aside, he's probably thinking that'd be a better idea.
Finally we end up on this planet. Remember the entire conversation before was about splitting into teams. Once there's only four of them, Lena comes up with a fantastic original idea her dumbass dad would never have come up with.
"Maybe we should split up, there is some shops we should check out," Lena said.
"Good idea, two of us could go up to that building up there," Craig said.
Oh Craig, go find a cold shower and stfu
A reminder: this team is very likely supposed to be going down to get supplies to repair Voyager.
But who cares, building on top of a hill!
Claire looked around, she spotted a young girl who looked very pale, standing at the edge of the cliff face staring out to sea.
Ah, I see what's happening here. The only point of the B4FV extras. Faye had her turn in Oasis, now it's Claire's. Lisa has the Monkey Island parodies. Danny and Ian never get a look in, and Lee, one noted glutton. Okay so just Claire and Faye's point is to be erm... the plot device for episodes like these. Lets watch/read!
Meanwhile Lena and Lee were passing a small street of restaurants. "Well this place sure has a lot to offer. I'm starting to think that Harry got the wrong place. It seems to be just a boring tourist resort," Lena said.
Oh I'm sure Harry has his reasons for picking this planet that isn't yet obvious. Its been two episodes since anyone's died so.
Chakotay, Tom and Nikki meet up with them, so the first split up was very pointless.
"Nope, every shop is like a tourist shop. None of them have the material we want," Lena replied.
--
"They went to check out that building on the top of that small mountain. We aren't expecting to meet them for another ten minutes," Lena replied.
"We may as well just wait around for them in this cafe. There's no where else to go," Chakotay said.
Oh Harry, you bitter scamp. What are you up to?
Now everyone's in their places, the Pokemon plot kicks in.
"No alien man has visited here and lived to tell the tale. Every man who visits dies, and there is no reason to how they die," the woman replied.
Ok, it sorta kicks in. FV likes to make things edgier, remember.
"No one knows the answer to that, little missy, but I do know this. I have tried to warn thousands of alien men during my time at this resort. Most of them tell me they've seen a pale girl with long blonde hair, staring out to sea. I know that girl must be responsible. There is an ancient legend that speaks of a girl, described like that, who steals men's souls," the woman replied.
Blonde hair woman, steals men's souls, Nikki hasn't spoken in a while. I'm onto you missy!
"Craig will probably see her, he'll never miss a blonde girl," Lee said jokingly.
Hahahaha, you're damn right.
Lena rolled her eyes, "he isn't like that anymore, Lee."
"You'd like to believe that, wouldn't you," Lee said.
OH! YOU ARE ON FIRE!
"Well that girl can't get us when we're on our ships," Lee said.
"I am warning you, you'll never leave alive," the woman said.
Not a problem:
Chakotay:
Awayteam to Enterprise, beam us all back pronto. Don't give us any
of the usual trouble like blocking signals, or dropped commbadges, or...
Captain
James Offscreen Stuart: Bitch please
Harry:
aaaaw
The End
But no, they decide to go look for Claire and Craig. Really people, you've already admitted there's nothing here for you.
"Er, Claire. We should go back. By the time we get back from here we'll have to meet Lena and Lee," Craig said.
"Oh, we don't have to worry about that," Claire said. She turned around. Her eyes had lost all colour, they were only white.
Pfft, I was looking forward to something different. Purple eyes would be cool. Or maybe orange. I'm sure we'll get to those eventually.
In: "Lewis here, we'd better get back quickly. Craig's dead."
Ooops, shame that
Doctor Jones and Lee were busy treating Craig. Craig had a deep cut on the side of his face. Lena and Chakotay were standing nearby.
"Apart from the cut on his face, he has no other injuries. I don't understand how this happened," Doctor Jones said.
Okay. I'm sure I've seen this one before. My deja vu continues with Craig not remembering how he died. But he does remember Claire stalking some girl.
"Didn't the old woman say that only the men see that pale girl. If it was that girl that Claire saw how come Craig didn't see her?" Chakotay said.
shows how much I'm paying attention, she did?
*checks* nope. She only said that the ghost only kills men, and they see her before that. You're assuming this. Stop looking for plot holes, there will be plenty around in plain sight.
"Dad, do you think some of us should go back to the planet to find out something about his attack, or should we just leave orbit of the planet just in case?" Lena asked.
"Oh so now you want me to make all the decisions," Chakotay said. He folded his arms.
Don't celebrate apparent character development yet.
"Er, we're on Voyager.. dumbass," Lena muttered.
Anyways, the answer is obvious. LEAVE! Craig's fine, the planet has nothing you want. It's not bloody difficult!
Yes yes, I know Claire might still be possessed. But they don't know that.
Chakotay smiled. "Good point Lee. Besides if we leave we won't get the supplies we need. All awayteams will have to just have women in them."
Um, was I imagining the part where most of the team were sitting around cos there was nothing for them to buy/trade? No, I'm sick of backtracking.
"Nah, I doubt it'll be safe that way. That old woman said all the alien men won't leave alive, yet Tom, Lee and you came back safely," Lena said.
"So what do you suggest?" Doctor Jones asked.
"Maybe we should go to the Enterprise and take it out of orbit," Lena replied. Everyone glanced at her with blank expressions. "Maybe if you guys are out of orbit, you'll be safe."
whut?
Okay fine, yes she's right about Chakotay, Tom and Lee (for now, again Claire). But why.... are only girls allowed on Voyager now or something?
"I got a better plan, let's just stay here.
No, bad bad Lee. Chakotay agrees cos nobody can think of a decent reason for them to stay so the plot can happen, SO WHY BOTHER
The
Mess Hall, Enterprise,
an hour later:
The
room was incredibly busy. The loud music that was playing had
attracted quite a lot of the crew. A group of people were dancing to
the song DJ. Surprisingly Claire was one of them. She had a pair of
sunglasses on and she was holding a bottle of vodka.
Did you really think that with Virus retired, and Kiara being forgotten about, that the music labelling would stop? Hahaha
"No, she is the second shyest out of the main cast," Craig said.
"Second, who's the first?" Lena asked.
"Lisa,
excuse me? Just because she gets possessed all the time, doesn't mean Faye isn't shy. She's me of the teen years, believe me, she's a wreck.
Lena looked at the bottles James and Craig had. "One of you, give me a sip of that."
Apparently Lena's going cold turkey on booze. That seems to be going very well.
"She just looks hyper I guess.. there's only one way to know," James said. He whispered something in Craig's ear.
"Ok, I'll try. Er, Lena do you want to dance?" Craig asked.
"Sure!" Lena yelled and she stood up.
I'm so glad that was just dance. And fgs James, what kinda big brother does this? I know you're new but pfft
James tapped his commbadge. "Stuart to Sickbay, Lena's drunk."
In: "Oh goody, I've never treated a drunk patient before. Beaming her right up."
I'm sure *snigger* there's a reason for *pffftLOL* this *wipes tear from eye*
"You don't think I'd let my drunk little sister dance with someone like you, do you?" James asked, he drank some of his vodka.
ah, there it is. still got to be better ways
"Oh, I'm fine Tom. Just fine.. want to get a drink?" Claire asked as she lowered her sunglasses a little.
Tom just stared at her. "Yeah, ok." Claire headed towards the door, Tom followed her.
Oh yeah just noticed the sunglasses. Gotta hide the unnatural eye colour, right, gets in the way of killing. Important to remember.
Tom rematerialised on the biobed next to her. Lena shuddered a little, then she looked confused. "Strange, I only do that when someone's dead."
"That's because he is," Freddie said as he scanned Tom.
Meh, that's still not really a reason. Somebody could've told Lena that Tom was dead.
"Just like that other fella, there's no injuries that could of killed him. Only a scar on his face. It covers the whole side of his face, I heard that the other one had a smaller one," Freddie replied.
Heh from what I remember of this, which isn't much, I'm confused as to why it's only a scar so far. Very easily could be wrong.
In: "Lena to Garvin, you do have to at least try to revive him you know. Lena out."
Freddie shook his head, "do I tell you how to do your own job?"
lol
someone should
Conference, Enterprise:
Okay that's it, you were warned
Fifth Enterprise E: +1
Yes sure Voyager's damaged still, but I'm sure it's been habited and in use in previous episodes. Also Chakotay made a huge stink about Lena not having any command presence with the Enterprise when Voyager's involved or just around, so naturally you think Voyager's up and running as the flagship, but no Enterprise is where the meetings are, the teams are being sent from. Wtf is going on?
Conference,
Enterprise:
Kathryn,
Chakotay, Lena, Craig and James were standing around one side of the table.
Uhoh Janeway and James in the same room, and same side of the table. This isn't a good omen.
*snigger* don't be daft, continuity is hard ok
"I want your Chief of Security to investigate this, Lena. We haven't appointed one for Voyager yet," Kathryn said.
"But, neither have I. I'm still deciding," Lena said.
"Maybe we should have a Security Chief for both ships," Chakotay said.
RIP Tuvok :(
I'm not gonna pick about neither ship having a replacement chief of security yet. They can't even decide what ship they should be on.
And yeah, one chief for both ships is a good plan... unless the ships split up. You need a deputy or something.
"I was deciding between Craig and James. They're the only main characters who are in Security teams," Lena said.
This is also why I'm not picking. Craig's not chief replacement material, and his time in Security is still a huge ????, while James...
It has only been a few weeks since one of them turned evil and became a security threat himself," Kathryn said.
yeah. otherwise he's your man
"That won't happen again," James muttered.
"Really? Can you promise me that, probably not," Kathryn said.
Ooookay
1) I think that James having a perfectly normal conversation here, with no sign of a temper or even any sarcasm, is proof enough that he's improved. I'm not saying give him the job asap, but at least give him a chance to prove/earn it.
2) seriously, this is his mother saying this. Wtf bbq. She said in the last one she was so sure that he wasn't responsible for the attack on her, so where has this s$$$ come from?
J/C are the worst (grand)parents ever: +1
"I'll be able to control it if it happens again," James said.
"How come, if you could, how come you didn't the last time?" Chakotay asked.
See, James doesn't get aggravated with this crap. At least not yet.
Oh and Chuckles, despite what was said in New Earth, James's turn was a completely new experience for him, and a lot of s$$$ went on. Of course he failed that first time. Now he knows what it's like, he has a good idea what to do. What a stupid bloody question.
"Lena, we should just stick with Craig until we're absolutely sure that James doesn't become a threat again," Kathryn said.
Lol, I think you'd be better off with Foster or Thompson. But what do I know
"Cow," James muttered.
"I heard that," Kathryn said angrily.
"Why do you think I said it?" James said.
"Maybe both can do the investigation. Craig could be Security Chief since he is the Lieutenant, and James can be the second in command or something," Lena said quickly.
"Sounds good to me. I get to boss him around," Craig said.
LOL good luck with that one Craig.
So erm what. They're worried that James is gonna turn and go on a killing spree again, so deny the chief promotion, but think this guy's an alright replacement AND makes them work together, even after he says this. Whatever James does next, it's not his fault. Just saying.
Lena's
Readyroom:
The
door opened, and James & Craig stepped inside. They were greeted
by a very huge rubbish tip, you could barely see the floor.
hahaha, like brother like sister.
wait, doesn't a big ship like this have a dedicated security office???????????
"Just watch, my room was worse than this," James said. He made his way over to the table, nudging stuff to the side with his foot. He eventually got to the table. Craig shook his head.
Really, I imagined him walking on everything.
"Yeah but what about the people we interview?" Craig asked. James shrugged. "Why don't we just clear a better path."
"Ok, you do that," James said. He sat down on Lena's chair, then he put his feet on the desk.
"Er, I said we," Craig said.
"Yeah, and I said you," James said.
"But..." Craig said but he was interrupted with a glare from James. "It shouldn't take long."
Yeah, Craig's such a leader and has earned so much respect.
James was still sitting in Lena's chair, he was now reading a PADD. Craig was beside the desk looking rather peeved.
"Why do you get the chair?" Craig asked.
"Because," James replied.
Because he's sitting in it. This isn't hard Craig. Stop picking fights with him, you ninny.
Claire's next to be interviewed. I can't imagine much will happen since she's already offed Craig, and I doubt James'll be a victim, at least not this soon.
Craig glanced down at her. She was fiddling with her sunglasses as she was looking at him.
um well
I suppose he didn't stay dead
"I saw him once, we went to get a drink then I came back. He went elsewhere. Now, you really do look like you need a break," Claire said. She lowered her sunglasses so he could see her eyes.
"What are you trying to say?" Craig asked nervously.
Claire/Ghost sweetie, your eyes aren't working.
Craig turned away, he glanced James' way. He wasn't paying any attention.
Oh now you want his help. come on chiefy, prove yourself
Dismissing her works, so that barely counts.
"Did you hear that?" Craig asked.
James groaned as he lowered his PADD. "Yeah, I'll call Doctor Garvin, she needs her eyes examined."
Bwahahahahaha
You know after bits of New Earth, Here & Now and even earlier scenes of this episode, I was concerned that James would be just blah/neutral as a means of keeping his cool. But no, it's getting harder to tell New Earth happened. imo anyway
The doors opened, Lena came in. She looked shocked as she looked around the room. "Who cleaned all this up?"
"It was him," James muttered.
*smirks*
"Well Claire's been acting weird. She kept trying to change the subject whenever she answered a question. There was something strange about her eyes though," Craig replied.
"Something strange about her, she was trying to chat him up," James said.
I feel like the second line should be two sentences. It doesn't look right
"Yeah right. Anyway this isn't the first comment like that. Lee sent a report saying that Claire was really creeping him out. There was something in her eyes that freaked him out the most," Lena said.
Okay so her eyes are doing the white thing, but it's not working on Craig anymore or Lee at all. It worked on Tom. What gives?
"Good idea. Lena to Williams," Lena said as she tapped her commbadge.
"Can you come to my Ready Room. We need to know more about what Claire was like," Lena said.
In: "Claire? Oh yeah... Claire.." The commlink cut off
??
"James, get out of that chair and come with me," Lena ordered. She headed towards the door. James got out of the chair and he followed her. Craig rushed to the chair and he sat himself down.
Of course he did.
The door to the turbolift opened. Lena shuddered like mad and she rushed to hide behind James. Lee was lying dead in the middle of the turbolift. He had the same scar on his face.
Ah
Ah again, remember when Lena's fear was decomposing corpses? Not fresh ones? Yeah me neither.
Immediately after this
"I thought you didn't like people who have been dead for 12 hours or so," James said.
That's sorta what I said... I've seen Bones, 12 hours is long enough.
"It's a mystery Captain. All there is is a deep scar. There's nothing else wrong with them both. The only difference there is between them and Craig is the size of the scar. Lee and Tom have longer cuts," Doctor Jones replied.
Hey, any theories? I only have very vague memories of this, so it's kinda like new to me and I haven't a clue why this scar business is like this
"I can, they're just in comas. They should wake up eventually, I just have no idea when," Doctor Jones said.
why the hell Craig was okay after his? I doubt it was because he'd be useful cos, yeah.
Later
that night, James' Quarters:
James
was sitting on the sofa nearby the brand new glass table. He was
reading another PADD, while holding what looked like a soft toy dog.
aaaaw
but no, I'm gonna ruin whatever you're thinking
Lena came straight in, she tried not to laugh. "Is that yours or Duncan's?"
James didn't bother looking up at her. "Neither."
Ok that wasn't that bad, must be another episode. I'll give you a preview OMG NO, BOYS DON'T LIKE CUDDLY TOYS
"She's had it since she was six. She seemed to lose interest in it when she was fourteen," James replied.
What's happening? My only thought was Yasmin, but that still doesn't fit like at all!
"I don't see how. It's not something special, I got it for her birthday. It was cheap enough for a six year old to buy, so you judge," James said.
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I think I know who he means and now I sad.
(ps thanks for reminding me about Test of Time and the money mentions. I'm confused again)
I'll go back to being sad since James was pretty much just sitting, cuddling this thing before Lena came in.
Before we move on, I noticed I missed a line that may have clued me in sooner:
"I just found it, I'm surprised she even brought it with her," James replied.
Okay so let me get this straight. Jessie's had this toy since she was a kid, and she's brought it with her when she ran away from home, again when she joined the Marquis, AND THEN made sure to bring it with her before evacuating the Marquis ship. And James thought she lost interest in the thing ages ago. That clearly isn't true, and ohmygod my heart hurts.
Yes I forgot this, and so its a fresh sad scene for me.
"Isn't the price, now is it," Lena muttered, she took the toy off him. "It's kinda cute actually."
"Ok, was there a reason for you coming here?" James asked as he put the PADD down.
Just when Lena realises she needs to be sensitive and not the teasy sister, James puts up his defences, typical.
"Oh yeah, just remembered. Mum's told Craig to talk to Claire tomorrow morning, but she was acting strange with him. Everyone who's been attacked so far were on that planet," Lena said.
"Let me guess, you want me to talk to her, right?" James asked.
I assume Chakotay's been put somewhere safe too, right?
Lena stood up, still holding the toy. "Ok. Er, do you want this back?"
"You can have it. Duncan's like me, he hates cuddly toys," James replied.
I was right, it is here. Still not so bad. I do remember a later episode where Duncan's holding one, and as soon as he's seen he throws it aside and denies. Yeeeaaah why, I dunno.
Claire was sitting at one of the tables near the far window. She was staring towards the window. She turned away from it, she then looked up to whoever was standing beside the table.
Ohnoes James is gonna off screen interrogate her
God he can't even walk into a room without this avoidy crap
"Pull up a chair, and have a drink with me," Claire said, she fiddling with her sunglasses again.
here we go. we're over half way and no closer to answers, and now it's James' turn. We're still not gonna "see" anything are we
"That won't work with me," James said.
how can you be so sure?
Claire put her sunglasses back in frustration. "Damn, you must be one of those dumb slayers." She stood up. "I'll just have to do it another way."
you barely even tried, so lucky guess. And what? Slayers are immune to whatever this is?? okay
Everyone in the room suddenly stopped what they were doing, they all slowly headed out of the room. James didn't even notice.
"That's better, just me and you, this'll be fun," Claire said
It doesn't work on him like it normally does, but apparently it does put him to sleep. How can you not notice EVERYONE leave?
"Oh, just what everyone wants at least once in their life. A little revenge," Claire replied. She quickly raised her hands up in front of her, a bright white lightning strike emerged from her hands and it hit James. He fell onto the ground. The lightning was still hitting against him.
What corny villain dialogue.
I mean, ohhno she's possessed by a witch. This crap's getting old.
"That's right, just die quietly," Claire said quietly. A glass bottle flew off the nearby table and it smashed against the back of her head. She fell to the ground, as she did the lightning strike ended. James lay half unconscious on the ground, a small scar appeared on the side of his face.
I er...
what?
is this what I think it is?
The nearby door opened and Lena & Craig ran in.
my god, it is! omgspoilers, James has unlocked another off screen power and for once this one's actually canon, not a daft joke I'm never sick of. Stay tuned.
James Badasses Off Screen For Our Sins: +1
"You're not Claire, are you?" Craig said questioningly.
Daw Craig, points for trying *snigger*
"Oh don't worry, I'm willing to bet that Lena never liked you because of your intelligence," Claire said. She raised her hands like before, another lightning strike went towards Craig. Lena pulled Craig to the ground. The strike hit the wall instead.
I'm sorry but you had both James and Craig alone in a room earlier, why didn't you do this then?
"What are you going to do about it, little girl? Hit me?" Claire sneered.
"No, I'm going to kick your sorry arse to hell and back," Lena said.
Dats fighting talk
Craig stood up. Lena put her arm out in front of him. "I can take care of her myself."
"Lena, I'm the Security Chief. I'm supposed to protect you," Craig said.
lol don't pretend this is something else
Sexist Crap Count: +1
I'm all about honesty here
"I don't need protecting. Now, if you want to help me you can help James and stay out of my way," Lena said.
You tell him.
She raised one hand into the air beside her. "Say bye bye." A red lightning strike came from her hand incredibly quickly. Before Lena had time to react Craig pushed her lightly out of the way. The strike hit him instead. He fell to the ground. "Damn it, I missed."
Um, what does the red one do, and why if it's worse is it only being used now? Nah, can't be.
"Now Lena, you should know it was originally meant for you," Claire said. She started to raise her hand back up, but Lena quickly hit her hard in the face. She fell backwards into the nearby table.
Lena went over to Claire who was trying to get back up. She grabbed a tight hold of Claire by the throat. "No one tries to kill my brother, or kill any of my friends and get away with it."
An actual ok fight scene for once. yay!
Meanwhile James was trying to pull himself to his feet. He saw Claire trying to reach for another glass bottle. Lena then noticed as well, she grabbed a hold of Claire's arm. Claire just managed to grab the bottle and she threw it towards Lena. It smashed against the side of her face causing her to fall to the ground. Blood was coming from the many cuts on her face.
spoke too soon
Claire then stood up, she watched James as he tried to get up too. Claire turned to where Lena was lying. She kicked her hard in the head, she then fell unconscious. "She's a feisty little b**ch isn't she?"
uhoh
"Oh, but you can't can you. You're worried you'll lose control and turn evil again. You see, I know everything. You're too scared to even touch me," Claire said. She kicked Lena in the head again.
But you didn't even know he was a Slayer earlier, so how would you know this??? sigh
"Stop it, or you'll regret it," James said. Claire smiled and she kicked Lena once again in the head. James turned away.
"I think I will. Kicking someone who's unconscious is losing it's appeal. I'm sorta in the mood for killing kids. Maybe one called Duncan,"
oh fiddlesticks, Janeway's gonna be proved right and she'll be all smug "I told you so that my stupid son can't not be evil, so there."
and again, how do you know this as well and not the other thing!
James slowly looked back at Claire. She smiled as he did and she started wandering back and forth. "Yeah, that's right. I think I'll go and kill that little pest, Duncan. He's a right little leech isn't he. He never stops whining on. It's always 'why' and 'when's mummy coming back' It's getting incredibly irritating."
Ghost/Witch Claire is really tired of living, it seems
OH DAYUM
Claire stopped wandering, she turned to face James again. Her smile turned into a small grin. He was staring at her with red in his eyes.
Claire raised her arms back into the air. "But first, revenge is in order." The lightning strike came out of her hands again, it stopped just a few inches in front of James, then it went back towards Claire. When it hit her she didn't seem affected.
OH DAYUMMMM!!
James levelled up again, amazing
"Now if that wasn't strange, what is? Never mind though I can still get revenge another way, I mean Duncan means a lot to you... so why don't I just kill him off. How hard can it be. But first.." Claire said. Her eyes lost all their colour, and then she disappeared. As soon as she did so James collapsed again.
excuse me
what?
what's happening?
Later, Voyager's Bridge:
IT EXISTS OMG
for only three lines, to tell us what we already know. *shrug*
Lena glanced around the room. She saw James lying unconscious nearby. "Standby." She pulled herself to her feet. She went over to where James was. She knelt down next to him, she checked his pulse. "I'll live, James seems fine too."
I'm still none of the wiser. anyone want to guess what the passing out and disappearing was all about
"No need, Captain. I scanned both ships, Claire is on Voyager now. She's in our Mess Hall," Harry said.
Okay so we're to assume Claire magic-teleported, fine. But why the hell did James pass out at the same time? If she could do that she'd have done it before.
A few people were rushing out in panic, some were standing well away from the centre of the room. Claire had her hand raised in the air while Duncan was floating in mid air just in front of her.
Ok so no explanation. James just got Worf'd, I see. It was bound to happen one day.
"Let me down you stupid cow," Duncan replied, he threw some of his sweets at her.
AAAW, i love this kid. bless him
"Let's see how you cope with the actual flying," Claire said.
AH HELL NO
Duncan slowly fell back onto his chair,
oh good, you never know with this series.
Claire looked rather confused. "What the, I didn't do that." As soon as he was back onto his seat, Duncan followed some more people out of the room.
Claire looked around the room, she spotted James at the doorway. Some people nearby him were quickly getting away. "Just in time, I was just about to kill him."
Ah there's that canon off screen power I promised you earlier.
James looked over at the kitchen, a couple of knives were not far in front of him. "I don't really see the point in this." He was just about to go and pick them up when they started floating in the air on their own. They literally flew in Claire's direction.
He's red-eyed, of course he's punning. But yeah, this s$$$'s good
One slashed her in the arm, the smallest one landed in the top half of her left leg. The others dropped to the ground. Claire slowly started to pull the small knife out of her leg.
Not bad for a first try
Lena: Pfft I'd have hit her with all the knives
Lena ran into the room, she stopped when she saw Claire pulling the knife out of her own leg. James noticed Lena had arrived, he pulled sunglasses out of his pocket and he put them on.
And there it is, the sunglasses, an episode earlier than I thought.
Interesting that despite his "it won't happen again", he had them handy. It's not like he was going to a sunny planet or anything.
Claire glared at them both. "Who cares how it happened." She threw the knife in their direction. Lena quickly raised her own hand and stopped it before it got to them. The knife then started to fly back towards Claire. She rolled her eyes as she raised her own hand again. The knife flew towards Lena twice as fast and it landed in her chest. She slowly fell onto the ground.
OH SNAP, Lena's been defeated by her own Sueness.
"So touching, but so unnecessary. Sound familiar? Now I'm off to finish what I started," Claire said. She disappeared again.
She quotes Unu after killing Jessie
Fine, but she didn't know he was a Slayer a few scenes ago. She knows everything, including stuff she shouldn't, but that. Whatever
"I can, but the resources in this Sickbay haven't been that good since the Fair Chance incident.." Doctor Jones replied.
oh of course not, why was she beamed to this one then?
"We could beam her to the Enterprise Sickbay, but we don't have time for it. She'll be dead by the time that half witted Doctor does something," Doctor Jones said.
"Move away," James said.
um
I checked. He was the one that beamed her there. What?
Doctor Jones stepped away a little. James went closer to the biobed. He just started staring at Lena, the stab wound on her chest slowly healed itself. Doctor Jones started scanning her again.
"This is impossible, the internal bleeding has been stopped," Doctor Jones said.
Lena's gonna be pissed he saved her like this. It was bad enough when he only copied her powers, now he has a one she doesn't have
Lena didn't seem to hear him. She was staring at something in front of her. She slowly glanced up at James. "Are you ok?"
"Fine. I'd better be off," James replied. He turned to leave but Lena grabbed his arm.
"No you're not, I can sense... oh crap," Lena stuttered.
I'll be talking about this later, so maybe I shouldn't do so now
Who cares about that, it's time for an old habit or two to come back. Which one you don't wonder? Well
"When I was unconscious I received a telepathic dream off someone nearby. It was actually intentionally planted into that person's mind. Over a hundred years ago Tom, Lee, Craig and James' past lives beat some girl to death just so they could mug her. Her ghost has been haunting the resort on the planet, she's been looking for her attacker's reincarnations so that she could get revenge. Her ghost couldn't leave the resort, so she has to possess someone in order to leave," Lena replied.
EXPOSITIONING PARAGRAPH COS MARILL CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO WRITE S$$$, VIA LENA THE SPEECHMAKER
ok now I'll read it *cracks knuckles*
1) While I was out after my uselessness I just happened to have a dream that tells me everything.
2) Did the dream have the words "100 years ago" subtitled over
3) Yes you read that right, the past lives of FOUR people who happen to be on Ent/Voy at the same time, who just happen to be at this planet despite passing it years ago without incident, murdered a girl for her wallet.
4) Her ghost kills any alien man she sees, because like the Maji, it's only going to be aliens and so just in case she has to kill all she sees. And when people reincarnate they never change genders, so no need to watch out for female aliens.
5) Her ghost couldn't leave so she had to possess, and she never thought to do this before? Or was it just because she happened to find ALL FOUR reincarnations at the same time... THREE of which were on the awayteam.
6) You really couldn't think of a way to show this as a flashback, huh?
7) Really? The Pokemon episode this was based on was about a ghost who lured men to the cliff, where she had petrified, waiting for her lover to return. They'd be absolutely smitten with her, and once she got them she'd make them gibbering wrecks. Turns out the ghost is actually a Pokemon that enjoys re-enacting these old wives tails, only he tells that to the actual ghost of the girl so *shrug*.
Apart from the top of the hill, a brief look at the ghost only one person could see, and the initial hypnotising she did, what's the connection to Death of the Night?
Despite this, this isn't a complaint. I hate "inspiration" episodes that either do nothing different, or give up doing things differently halfway. I just wish this exposition didn't happen.
"But who implanted that dream, and why?" Doctor Jones asked.
Well that's a toughie, it'd either be Marill or Marill pretending to be another writer.
"I could sense evil in James again. He's doing his best to control it, but at the moment it may not be good enough," Lena replied.
Janeway: *smug*
Lena: *rolls eyes*
Meanwhile, Claire's still trying to suicide via Evil Slayer.
Duncan was hiding behind one of the tables. "Stop following me around psycho b**ch."
"Now young kids your age shouldn't know language like that," Claire said.
"What, English?" Duncan asked.
Who'd want to kill this kid, really? Mine's the only explanation.
heard the doors opening and closing, she then turned to face the doors. "This is getting tiring," she groaned.
I agree... counter on standby
Claire smiled. "If you insist." She let go of Duncan and he fell onto the floor. "Oops, my hands slipped."
James slowly went over to Claire. She was about to speak but she was pushed straight into the far away wall. She hit it so hard that a huge dent was left in it. She fell onto the floor.
Okay at this point I don't know if James actually physically pushed her and this is being coy/offscreeny, or it was his new power doing it. I'm still gonna do it
James Badasses Off Screen For Our Sins: +1
"So, you're going to kill me, just like your past life and his friends did," Claire said.
Um
"Not exactly. You see when you implanted that dream into me,
Oh! he got it too
Lena was so proud she had that dream, diddums
"Not exactly. You see when you implanted that dream into me, you forget to leave out the part about you possessing another girl forty years ago," James said.
Wait so she has done this before? lol I assume she didn't try leaving that time.
Claire tried to get up. "I left her body intentionally."
"I doubt it, you had found Tom's previous past life. Why would you want to give up so easily," James said.
Oh bloody helllllllllllll
I just remembered how this episode is resolved. I'm a little embarrassed since I thought something like it happened in the next one. Now I dunno how that one's resolved.
Claire pulled herself to her feet. "It doesn't matter, I'll still get my revenge."
A couple of minutes later:
no probs, we're not gonna see it anyway. good thing too:
"Waiting," James replied.
"What for?" Lena asked.
"The only way to get her ghost out of Claire's body is to get a certain amount of water on her," James replied.
oh, I remembered the resolution a bit wrong. NOW I remember it well, and its just... hilarously dark in a bad way
"No, I didn't drown her. I forced her into the bathtub, and put a forcefield around her. You get the idea," James said.
This is almost as funny as the bookshelves or the bed throwing, the intent here sells it.
"Er, how long have you been waiting?" Lena asked nervously.
"I dunno, it feels like only a minute or so," James replied.
I'd say wait for it but I think you already got it
"She's not dead is she?" James asked.
"Yes she bloody well is!" Lena yelled.
"Oh," James muttered.
James Kill Count: +1
Yeah it was an accident, that shouldn't count right?
"You f**king idiot, your eyes are f**king black! You're evil!" Lena literally screamed. The security officers backed off in fear.
Clearly it does. That's not fair.
"Lena, if I was evil I wouldn't of saved your life," James said
That would be mighty fishy and a good point, but that was during the red eye phase.
"Lena, I've got control, there's nothing to worry about," James said.
"Really? If that's so how come your eyes are black? How come you've gotten skills that only thirty year old Chosen Slayers have?" Lena asked angrily.
That's oddly specific Lena. James is almost 30 and you never thought to tell anyone about this, until now?
"How come I didn't intentionally kill Claire when I could of easily done so? How come I didn't kill Janeway on the spot? Answer that," James replied.
Well yeah
1) He turned red-eyed because of Lena's murder and the threatening of Duncan. So yeah he'd be fixated on killing Claire or who possessed her. It does seem like another Unu situation, as in it's not that simple. Claire didn't do it, and the ghost is already dead. Very confusing for his evil state.
2) Once again James is black eyed and yet strangely calm. He couldn't even tell he had shifted stages, I assume or he would've known he'd killed Claire.
Just stating what's happening, no complaints here. I've already said James's evil storyline has more to it, it's a good one.
Anyway the episode ends with James going to pick up his son, while Lena tells her company to get Claire to Sickbay.
Will Tom, Lee, Craig and Claire recover?
I'm still wondering how the hell Claire managed to die in a bathtub only surrounded by the forcefield for a few minutes. (It said only a few minutes went by). How tightly focused was the forcefield, since when do forcefields block any oxygen from getting in... I can understand his confusion, this shouldn't have killed her unless the forcefield was at water level.
How many guys has Nikki locked in her cupboard so far?
Yeah erm, I'd forgotten about this again.
Who will be the Enterprise's first officer?
Duncan will lead the Enterprise to glory, bow damn it!
Will we see the ghost again?
"We" won't, unless Voyager goes backwards again. It does seem like the ghost is still around to haunt the planet, or that particular spot in space *shrug*
What will happen with James?
oh yeah I'm meant to be snarky with these. Erm, erm...
And will Vulpix, Togepi and I come back alive from our holiday?
I remember that holiday well, so no, not at all.
Score:
Negatives:
1) Lena and Chakotay's back and forth arguments over who gets to make commands. FFs Lena, way to earn some fans.
2) Harry is namedropped when they mention who pointed this planet out to them, HOWEVER it turns out that all of the shops are touristy and so worthless to them. They still stick around when there's no danger that they see, cos readers know Claire's possessed but the characters don't, but it doesn't matter anyway cos everything else happens on the ships. They went to the planet cos the plot said so, simple as. They stayed at the planet because ??
3) Another unexplained or lazyignored plot complaint: the scar every victim gets. Why?
4) You can argue all you want that James/Jessie going to Resurrection planet Thairo and waking up their past lives is a coincidence too far, and since said planet's in the Delta, well you got me there. Still, them both being together isn't so farfetched. What is, is James, Craig, Tom and Lee's past lives being from the same planet who commit the same crime on the same person, reincarnate in the same species to return to said planet to get haunted by this girl. Yeaaah stretchy as can be, if you forget that this is the second time Voyager will have been here.
5) So okay let me get this straight. The crew by a certain point in the story know that the villain is a ghost who murders men, and they're dead sure she's possessed Claire. And the brilliant plan they come up with is to send another man, someone who lost his Security Chief promotion to CRAIG because of his... behaviour lately, to talk to Claire as if she's just a naughty crewmember who stole a pen. I said it in the review when I still thought Only In My Dreams was the episode that turned him back to evil, and with hindsight I'll say it again, what happens to James is not his fault. You all f-ed up people.
6) James accidentally killing Claire to turn him black eyed, only because the point was to show he did have some control and the parts of his personality that really hates to kill even if it calls for it. This could've been handled better.
7) Why does James collapse randomly after Claire teleports away to get Duncan? It is narrowly hinted that during it he got the exposition dream that Lena got, but Lena had to get nearly killed for that. Scratch that, both getting this important information the way they both did, it's dumb.
Sub-total: 7
Positives:
1) Conference Room scene talking about Security Chiefs, with the I assume attempt at James foreshadowing. Not bad. It's still dumb they elect Craig at all, but hey.
2) I like how James is as close to normal as he's ever been since Oasis, and yet the plot still does this to him. He bloody tries so hard and yet still gets affected by the evils, shows it's not something to be shrugged off or an infection of sorts that follows any kind of rules.
3) James and Jessie's old stuffed toy. A sad detail I'd forgotten.
4) James' "second" turn into Evil Mode gives him a huge power boost; the telekinesis (I assume the lightning reflection was this) and healing, all apparently powers Chosens get when they're older. It's a positive cos I like this storyline, even more so since I forgot some stuff. As stated in negatives, it's not perfect.
The season's doing fine so far. When I say fine I mean better than I pictured.
Next Time: Faye once again gets used by the bad guy cos she's clearly the Troi of the crew, James keeps on adding up, and the ending's pretty rough in a good/meant to be way for once.
